Sandy Alderson will have a medical procedure this week in New York that will keep him from attending the general managers' meetings, Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said on Monday.
Ricco said the procedure had been scheduled for after the season, but it was pushed back as the Mets made their run to the World Series.
Alderson, 67, fainted during a news conference Wednesday. Citing the general manager's privacy, Ricco declined to elaborate on the nature of the procedure or whether it is related to Alderson's fainting spell.
The Mets will be represented by Alderson's top lieutenants: Ricco, Paul DePodesta and J.P. Ricciardi.
"It's a pretty veteran group," Ricco said. "We're capable of handling it."
The three will remain in contact with Alderson, as is common practice during the regular season, when DePodesta and Ricciardi do much of their work remotely.
Last season, the Mets signed Michael Cuddyer during the GM meetings, which are held relatively early in the offseason free-agency cycle. Though Ricco said he does not anticipate a similar move this season, he insisted that the Mets will be ready to act even with Alderson remaining in New York.
Said Ricco: "We can certainly do whatever we need to do."
