Sign of the times for Mets: Here's to good health

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - "Prevention and Recovery."
The sign bearing that slogan seemed like a bad punch line after a barrage of injuries sabotaged the Mets last season. One is posted above the hallway leading to the clubhouse exit here and another is painted on the wall of the weight room at Tradition Field.
The Mets hope the message resonates among their players during the next six weeks. They made no changes to their training staff or medical team from the Hospital for Special Surgery, but they did want to shift their mind-set for this season, which is where the sign comes in.
As one Mets official explained it, it is a reminder for players to strike a balance between their baseball work on the field and off it - i.e., the weight room. The team does not want its players to overwork themselves with a long season ahead and hopes to stress the importance of rest along the way.
No Barajas or Escobar
The Mets still were waiting to hear back from Rod Barajas regarding their offer of a minor-league deal to come into camp. Their biggest competition appeared to be the Rangers, but the Mets did not seem interested in upping their modest bid. As one official said, "If we use [Omir] Santos, we use Santos."
Kelvim Escobar, who is slowed by shoulder soreness, did not make an appearance on the reporting date but is expected in camp for tomorrow's first workout. The Mets say they knew all along that he would be behind as he concentrates on strengthening his surgically repaired shoulder.
Frenchy arrives early
Jeff Francoeur dropped off some bags, but he mostly came early to flee the 28-degree temps - and snow - in Atlanta. As for exchanging the Braves' spring training home of Orlando for quiet Port St. Lucie, he said, "I just work out and play golf anyway."
