Trevor Hoffman, saves leader, retires

Trevor Hoffman, who has a record 601 major league saves, announced that he is ending  his 18-year career. He is 41 saves ahead of the Yankees'  Mariano Rivera.

Hoffman, 43, last pitched for the Brewers. He is expected to return to the Padres -- where he had most of his success--in a front-office capacity.

"It's time to retire. It's time to move on," Hoffman told mlb.com. ``This is more of a self-evaluation. I expect to pitch at a certain level and I had to be honest with myself that I wasn't certain I could maintain that anymore.''
