Mets chief operating officer Jeff  Wilpon directly addressed the departure of Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya in this morning's press release:

``We are extremely disappointed in this year's results and the failures of the past four seasons,"  Wilpon said. ``We need to hire a new general manager with a fresh perspective who will transform this club into a winner that we want and our fans deserve."

Wilpon later said of the pair,  ``I think we handled it in the most humane way we could.''  Wilpon said Manuel was ``appropriattely disappointed,'' when informed of the decision not to renew him.

Wilpon said the decision to remove the pair was made ``a few weeks ago.''
