MLB report: Ramon Urias has 3 RBIs for Orioles, who beat Dodgers to avoid first series sweep in 14 months
Ramon Urias drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, Gunnar Henderson homered and scored three runs and the host Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 8-5, on Wednesday to avoid what would have been their first time getting swept in 14 months.
Los Angeles (55-40) had won eight of nine after taking the first two games of the series. Baltimore (58-37) has not been swept in a series since May 2022.
James Outman hit an opposite-field home run in the fourth off Dean Kremer, the first home run to left at Camden Yards in 4.161 plate appearances by lefthanded batters at the ballpark since the leftfield wall was lengthened and raised before the 2022 season.
Danny Coulombe (3-1) allowed one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Julio Urias (7-6) gave eight runs, matching his career high. The eight earned runs off the 26-year-old lefthander were a career worst.
“It just didn't seem like he was really comfortable out there,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Just ran out of bullets. The stuff wasn't sharp. With that, it led to some soft contact early. Didn't have command. It was just one of those days.”
While Urías had his roughest game of the season, Coulombe had an outstanding one.
“That was his performance of the year,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. “It won us the game."
Yennier Cano worked a scoreless eighth and Felix Bautista pitched a scoreless ninth for his 26th save.
Urías’ first double keyed a four-run first for the Orioles, and his second gave them a 6-2 lead after three.
Henderson homered with two outs in the fifth to give Baltimore an 8-5 lead, his first home run off a lefthander.
“Not to be cocky, but I hope it won't be the last one,” Henderson said.
Rangers 5, Rays 1: Leody Taveras and Jonah Heim homered as the AL West-leading host Texas stretched its winning streak to six games.
Taveras snapped an 0-for-12 slide when he homered on the first pitch of the third inning against Zack Littell (0-2). Along with his 11th homer, the Rangers' No. 9 batter had an RBI single in the seventh. Heim's 14th homer was a three-run shot in the eighth.
Tampa Bay (60-39) is 3-11 in July, and is not alone atop the AL East for the first time since being tied after winning on opening day as part of its 13-0 start. Baltimore (58-37) is ahead by percentage points after a win over the Dodgers.
Tampa Bay hosts Baltimore in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday night.
Texas (58-39), which wrapped up its second three-game series sweep since the All-Star break, has its longest win streak since also winning six in a row in 2019.
A's 6, Red Sox 5: JJ Bleday, Cody Thomas and Jace Peterson each hit two-run home runs, and host Oakland won its second straight following an eight-game skid.
Bleday’s homer was his second in as many days while Thomas’ deep drive was the first of his career. Peterson, who also walked and scored on Thomas’ home run, connected for his sixth in the fourth inning.
Pirates 7, Guardians 5: Ji Man Choi and Jared Triolo hit two-run singles in a five-run seventh inning helped by an overturned call, and host Pittsburgh rallied from a four-run deficit to stop a five-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh trailed 4-0 in the fifth before Nick Gonzales' run-scoring single and Jake Suwinski's RBI double against Aaron Civale.
Cardinals 6, Marlins 4: Nolan Gorman hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs to help host St. Louis to just its second series sweep this season.
Nolan Arenado's RBI single and Gorman's 19th homer built a 4-0 lead in the first off NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara, and Miami's losing streak reached a season-high six.
Gorman added a run-scoring single in the seventh against Huascar Brazobán, and another run scored on third baseman Jon Berti's throwing error.
Astros 4, Rockies 1: Brandon Bielak (5-5) pitched one-hit ball into the sixth inning, and Chas McCormick homered for visiting Houston, which split the two-game series.
C.J. Cron spoiled the shutout bid with a home run off Ryan Pressly in the ninth.
Phillies prospect getting surgery?
The Philadelphia Phillies medical staff has recommended righthanded pitching prospect Andrew Painter have surgery on his right elbow.
The team said Wednesday that a UCL reconstruction on Painter's elbow was advised along with ulnar nerve transposition surgery. The 20-year-old sprained the ulnar collateral ligament during spring training in March. — AP
