Orioles open with win over Price, Rays
Jeremy Guthrie allowed three hits in eight shutout innings while outpitching David Price, Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis each drove in two runs as visiting Baltimore opened the season with a 4-1 win Tampa Bay Friday night.
Taking up where they left off during a nice two-month stretch to end last season under manager Buck Showalter, the Orioles ruined a festive evening in which the defending AL East champions hoisted their latest division title banner at Tropicana Field.
And, they did it with Guthrie outdoing last year's AL Cy Young Award runner-up. Roberts hit a two-run triple off Price in the fifth and scored on Markakis' sacrifice fly.
White Sox 15, Indians 10: Adam Dunn homered and had four RBIs in his debut for Chicago, and Carlos Quentin homered and drove in five runs as visiting Chicago built a 14-0 lead after four innings.
Dunn's third-inning homer got the White Sox started and gave the slugger seven homers on Opening Day, tying him with Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Eddie Mathews and one back of the major league record shared by Frank Robinson and his former Reds teammate Ken Griffey Jr.
Chicago roughed up Cleveland ace Fausto Carmona for 10 runs and 11 hits in three innings. Quentin and Dunn each hit two-run homers in the third, and the White Sox added eight runs in the fourth.
Pirates 6, Cubs 3: Neil Walker hit a grand slam and Andrew McCutchen also homered as visiting Pittsburgh opened with a win under new manager Clint Hurdle.
Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 6: Matt Lindstrom's wild pitch with one out in the top of the 11th inning allowed Gerardo Parra to score from third base, sending visiting Arizona to a wild win. Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez allowed six runs (five earned) over six innings.
