Ortiz leads Red Sox past Tigers
David Ortiz lined a three-run double to the left-center gap with one out in the ninth inning Saturday to give the host Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
It was the 18th game-ending hit of his career. "I won," he said. "That's it. Game over."
The Red Sox trailed 2-0 on Miguel Cabrera's 26th homer in the first inning and fell behind 4-0 in the fourth. Ortiz earlier struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh and with runners on second and third in the sixth.
Ortiz, Darnell McDonald and Billy Hall all had a pair of hits for Boston, and Ryan Kalish also had two hits in his major-league debut. The Red Sox, who failed to make a big trade by the deadline, won for just the 10th time in 24 games.
Max Scherzer took a shutout into the seventh inning, leaving with a 4-0 lead.
Indians 2, Blue Jays 1
Shin-Soo Choo doubled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as visiting Cleveoland snapped a three-game losing streak.
Josh Tomlin, who beat the Yankees in his major league debut on Tuesday, followed that performance by allowing only one run in 51/3 innings.
"I came in today ready to go just in case but it never was a sure deal," said Tomlin, who only was tabbed to start after Jake Westbrook was traded to St. Louis. "Toward the last inning, I could tell my arm was kind of dragging a little bit."
Reds 5, Braves 2
Ryan Hanigan doubled home two runs and kept going when the ball slipped away from Atlanta centerfielder Melky Cabrera as he tried to throw it to the infield, rounding the bases to score for host Cincinnati.
"I saw it as I was rounding second," Hanigan said. "I knew I had a chance. It was one of those things. It was good timing. I was in a position where I was deciding whether to go to third. I saw the ball come off and it made my decision pretty easy."
Bronson Arroyo (11-6) gave up five hits in seven innings for the Reds.
Giants 2, Dodgers 1
Pat Burrell lined a go-ahead two-run homer into the leftfield seats with two outs in the eighth inning for host San Francisco.
The Giants won for the eighth time in 10 games. They began the day 21/2 back of the first-place Padres, who had a night game with Florida, and increased their lead on the Dodgers to 51/2 games.
Chad Billingsley extended his scoreless innings streak to 212/3 spanning three starts, but the bullpen couldn't hold a one-run lead for Los Angeles. Casey Blake had put the Dodgers ahead with a solo homer in the seventh. - AP
