Overbay leads Diamondbacks over Phillies
Lyle Overbay lined a two-run double off Roy Halladay in the ninth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-2 win over the Phillies Tuesday night in Philadelphia.
Halladay (15-5) had retired 12 straight batters into the ninth. Halladay, trying to become the NL's first 16-game winner, allowed consecutive singles to open the inning.
"It can be a little tougher to swallow sometimes in the ninth then if you get blown out in the third," said Halladay, who tied a career high with 14 strikeouts and tossed his seventh complete game.
Overbay hit a one-out double to right as Arizona won the opener of this three-game series between NL division leaders.
Overbay knocked in all three runs as Arizona won its seventh straight.
Phillies lefthander Cole Hamels will skip at least one turn in the rotation with shoulder inflammation.
Brewers 2, Dodgers 1: Pinch hitter Mark Kotsay delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning for host Milwaukee.
Pirates 5, Cardinals 4: Garrett Jones homered to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning for Pittsburgh.
Nationals 6, Reds 4: Chien-Ming Wang (2-2) won back-to-back starts for the first time in three years and Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman homered for host Washington.
Red Sox, Rays split. Jon Lester (12-6) struck out eight in seven innings and Jacoby Ellsbury hit a three-run homer as Boston took the opener of a split doubleheader, 3-1, at Fenway Park.
In the nightcap, the Red Sox turned their first triple play since 1994 in the Rays' 6-2 victory.
Tigers 7, Twins 1: Justin Verlander (18-5) allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings to become baseball's first 18-game winner and Miguel Cabrera had three RBIs for host Detroit.
