Hank's Yanks, the summer-league team funded by Hank Steinbrenner that plays its home games at Baseball Heaven, enjoyed a banner day at the amateur draft.
The Red Sox, of all teams, selected centerfielder Williams Jerez of Grand Street Campus (in Brooklyn) with their second-round pick. Then the Yankees used their fourth-round pick to take third baseman Matthew Duran of New Rochelle High School. "It still hasn't sunk in yet," said Duran, who attended Tuesday night's Red Sox-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium, "It's surreal."
Jerez, in a statement, thanked the Steinbrenner family for its support.
Hank Steinbrenner, meanwhile, said that he wasn't upset that a young man whom he helped so much is now in line to play for the rival Red Sox.
"This isn't about baseball," Steinbrenner said in a statement. "It's about giving a couple of kids from NYC a chance to fulfill their dreams."
