Phil Hughes enters Saturday’s start 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA but has allowed three or fewer runs in five of his last six starts and is coming off a four-hitter against the Tigers. He credits adjustments he’s made with pitching coach Larry Rothschild and, to a degree, Andy Pettitte.
“I talk to him a lot,” said Hughes, who lockers next to Pettitte at home. “He’s a great guy to bounce things off of.”
...David Aardsma, signed by the Yankees on Feb. 22 with an eye toward next season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, threw his third batting practice in the last two weeks in Tampa. It’s possible the former closer could throw a simulated game in about a week .
