Phillies trim NL East magic number to 2
Ryan Howard hit an RBI double in the 10th inning soon after Cliff Lee fell one strike short of his seventh shutout, and the host Phillies beat the host Marlins, 2-1, Thursday night to sweep the day-night doubleheader.
The games were a makeup from rainouts because of Hurricane Irene last month.
The Phillies, who won the opener, 3-1, reduced their magic number for clinching a fifth straight NL East title to two.
Jose Lopez spoiled Lee's shutout bid when he hit a tying home run in the ninth. Lee struck out 12 and allowed five hits in nine innings, failing to earn his 17th win.
In the first game, Kyle Kendrick (8-6) didn't allow a hit until Logan Morrison's 20th homer led off the fifth.
Rangers 7, Indians 4: Michael Young hit a three-run double to go over 100 RBIs for the second time, and the AL West-leading Texas completed a three-game series sweep in Arlington.
Cleveland's loss cut Detroit's magic number for clinching the AL Central to one. The Tigers played later at Oakland.
Josh Hamilton homered for the third straight game, and Adrian Beltre also homered in extending his career-best hitting streak to 19 games.
Royals 7, White Sox 2: Melky Cabrera had four hits, including a home run, and Billy Butler hit a three-run homer to lead host Kansas City. The loss officially eliminated the White Sox from the playoffs.
Sandoval hits for cycle
Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval hit for the cycle against the Rockies. Sandoval hit a two-run homer in the first inning, singled in the second and doubled in the fifth. In the sixth, he hit a fly ball to the base of the wall in right-centerfield and beat the throw to third for the triple to complete his first cycle.-- AP
