Price sharp as Rays beat Red Sox
David Price pitched eight crisp innings, B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria homered and the Tampa Bay Rays held the Red Sox to three hits for the third straight game in a 4-0 win Wednesday in Boston.
"The possibility of a really good run is there," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. His pitchers "are feeding off one another right now. Everybody's trying to do the topper thing and I'm good with that."
The combined shutout by Price (11-10) and Kyle Farnsworth followed a day-night doubleheader in which James Shields and Jeff Niemann each pitched a complete game. Boston beat Shields in the opener, 3-1, before Niemann struck out 10 in a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Red Sox lost for the fifth time in seven games and dropped a half-game behind the Yankees for the AL East lead.

Indians 4, White Sox 1: Fausto Carmona (6-12) allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings for visiting Cleveland.
Phillies 9, Diamondbacks 2: Cliff Lee (13-7) threw seven impressive innings and Wilson Valdez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh as host Philadelphia snapped Arizona's seven-game winning streak.
Giants 7, Braves 5: Matt Cain (10-8) snapped his three-game losing streak with five-hit ball for eight innings for visiting San Francisco.
Brewers 3, Dodgers 1: Zack Greinke (12-4) won his fifth straight start and Jerry Hairston singled in two runs for host Milwaukee.
Cardinals 7, Pirates 2: Allen Craig hit two homers and drove in three runs for visiting St. Louis. -- AP
