ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained a muscle in his left side.
The team announced the move before Sunday’s series finale against the Baltimore Orioles. Manager Joe Maddon said the strained oblique muscle could sideline the All-Star third baseman a minimum of three weeks.
The Rays filled the roster opening by purchasing the contract of Felipe Lopez from Triple-A Durham.
Longoria was removed from the lineup in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s 3-1 loss to the Orioles. He’s 0 for 5 with a walk through two games.
Sean Rodriguez started at third base for Tampa Bay on Sunday.
