Rays' Price gets AL-best 14th win
David Price became the AL's first 14-game winner, Carlos Peña had four RBIs and the host Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, yesterday to complete a four-game sweep.
Price (14-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in 61/3 innings, tying the team record for wins in season. He struck out nine and walked two.
Peña hit a second-inning solo homer and added a two-run single in the third to put the Rays up 3-1. Peña made it 4-2 with an eighth-inning infield single.
The second-place Rays, who have won six straight and are 19-6 since June 30, open a three-game series with the East-leading Yankees tonight.
Nationals 5, Braves 3
Scott Olsen returned from the disabled list to win his first appearance in more than two months, Adam Dunn and Ian Desmond each homered and doubled for host Washington in a game interrupted 11/2 hours by rain.
Olsen (3-2) gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits in six innings before a thunderstorm caused the delay. The Nationals made room for Olsen by putting rookie Stephen Strasburg on the DL with right shoulder inflammation.
"They're taking every precaution with me, obviously," said Strasburg (5-2, 2.32).
"If he's 90 percent healthy, we shut him down," Washington manager Jim Riggleman said. "He's got to be 100 percent."
Marlins 5, Giants 0
Anibal Sanchez (8-6) pitched a one-hitter for his first shutout since a no-hitter in September 2006, Mike Stanton hit a pair of RBI doubles, and Ronny Paulino had two sacrifice flies for visiting Florida.
San Francisco rookie Buster Posey had his hitting streak snapped at 21 games.
Rockies 9, Pirates 3
Ubaldo Jimenez (16-2) pitched seven effective innings, Carlos Gonzalez and Brad Hawpe homered and Clint Barmes had two hits and three RBIs as host Colorado snapped an eight-game skid.
Texas added another bat for the playoff push, acquiring Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for minor-league pitchers Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. The Rangers also placed second baseman Ian Kinsler on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin . . .
