BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez on a new contract that will pay him $154 million over the next seven years.

The team said it would announce the new deal at a news conference on Friday afternoon. The terms were confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the deal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement.

The Red Sox acquired Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres in the offseason. The parameters of the deal were discussed at the time, but by waiting until after the season starts the Red Sox save luxury tax money.

A three-time All-Star, Gonzalez is in his eighth season. He has a career average of .282 with 169 homers.

The agreement was first reported by Comcast Sports Net.
