Right-hander Dan Haren signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Nationals, pending a physical, according to Ken Rosenthal.
While the “pending a physical” portion of a deal is normally just a procedural move, this may be one to watch. The Cubs reportedly dropped out of a trade for Haren before his option was bought out last month because they were concerned about his health.
If the deal goes through, it could represent a nice union for both sides. For one thing, Haren winds up richer than if the Angels had simply picked up his $15.5 million option for the 2013 season. Los Angeles had to pay Haren $3.5 million after declining the option, and added with the new money from the Nationals, Haren will make $1 million more than he would have otherwise.
For the Nats, Haren will replaced Edwin Jackson as the veteran presence in their rotation. Haren is 119-97 with a 3.66 ERA in 10 seasons for the Cardinals, Athletics, Diamondbacks and Angels. He posted a sub-4.00 ERA from 2007-2011 before slumping to a 4.33 ERA in 2012.
