The "Big Pelf" era is coming to an end.
The Mets intend to non-tender starter Mike Pelfrey, reliever Manny Acosta and center fielder Andres Torres by Friday night's deadline instead of offering the trio arbitration, according to a report by ESPNewYork.com's Adam Rubin.
Rubin writes that the Mets are open to re-signing Pelfrey, who's recovering from Tommy John surgery, but a reunion may not be in the cards. With Johan Santana, R.A. Dickey, Matt Harvey, Jon Niese and Dillon Gee already slated to fill spots in the Mets' rotation, Pelfrey might be out of room. Pelfrey was 0-0 with a 2.29 ERA in three starts before he was injured.
The Mets selected Pelfrey with the ninth pick of the 2005 draft, and though he showed glimpses of being a solid starter, he never lived up to his hype or potential.
Pelfrey, 28, is 50-54 with a 4.36 ERA in seven very inconsistent seasons with the Mets. After posting a 5.57 ERA in 2007, Pelfrey rebounded with a 3.72 ERA the following year. He regressed to a 5.03 ERA in 2009 before continuing the dizzying see-saw journey with a 3.66 ERA in 2010.
