Will Venable hit a leadoff home run and San Diego gave Clayton Richard some support for a change, lifting the visiting Padres over the Red Sox, 5-1, Wednesday in a game delayed by rain four times before it was called after 71/2 innings.

Adrian Gonzalez hit four singles to raise his major league-leading average to .359 and drove in Boston's run.

The start was delayed 35 minutes. Play was halted with two outs in the top of the third for 38 minutes and in the middle of the fifth for 31 minutes. The final delay in the middle of the eighth was 40 minutes.

Richard (3-9) lasted through two of the delays to snap a five-game losing streak. "It's good that he was rewarded for a performance that lasted like a 5 1/2-hour period," Padres manager Bud Black said."

Braves 5, Blue Jays 1: Brandon Beachy (2-1) had a career-high 11 strikeouts in his return from the disabled list, and Dan Uggla and Brian McCann hit two-run homers as host Atlanta completed a sweep. Jose Bautista homered for Toronto.

Rays 6, Brewers 3: Kelly Shoppach hit a two-run home run in the second and Elliot Johnson added a three-run homer in the seventh for visiting Tampa Bay.

Pirates 5, Orioles 4: Blake Davis made an error in his major-league debut, allowing host Pittsburgh to score the tying and go-ahead runs. Andrew McCutchen had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Pirates (37-37). Kevin Correia (9-6) tied for the major-league lead in victories.

Angels 6, Marlins 5: Mark Trumbo hit a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning as visiting Los Angeles handed Florida its franchise-record 12th consecutive one-run loss.

Nationals 2, Mariners 1: John Lannan (5-6) and host Washington got a pair of unearned runs off Erik Bedard (4-5). The Nationals have won 10 of 11.

White Sox 4, Cubs 3: Jake Peavy (3-1) returned from the disabled list with a win, A.J. Pierzynski had a two-run triple and the host White Sox won two of three in their first series with the Cubs this season.

Astros 5, Rangers 3: Pinch hitter Matt Downs had a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth as visiting Houston scored four runs off Texas closer Neftali Feliz (0-1).

Tigers 7, Dodgers 5: Casper Wells opened the game with one of Detroit's four home runs, and Austin Jackson made an over-the-shoulder catch on Dioner Navarro's bases-loaded drive for the final out for the visiting Tigers.

Indians 4, Rockies 3: Josh Tomlin (9-4) came through with another quality start and designated hitter Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer for host Cleveland.

Phillies 4, Cardinals 0: Cliff Lee (8-5) threw a six-hitter for his second straight shutout, and Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard homered in the fourth for visiting Philadelphia.-- AP
