Two people familiar with negotiations say the Chicago Cubs have a tentative trade in place to obtain righthander Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays would receive outfielder Sam Fuld and several prospects for Garza, who would be sent to Chicago along with prospects.

Garza, 27, pitched a no-hitter against Detroit last season, when he went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA. He spent his first two major-league seasons with the Twins and the last three with the Rays.

Nats, LaRoche agree

Free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche and the Washington Nationals have finalized a two-year contract worth about $16 million. The 31-year-old LaRoche hit .261 with 25 homers and a career-high 100 RBIs for Arizona last season.

Mariners sign Ryan

The Seattle Mariners have signed Brendan Ryan, acquired last month in a trade with St. Louis, to a two-year, $2.75-million contract. The infielder played in a career-high 139 games last season for the Cardinals, batting .223 with 36 RBIs.

Rangers clear space

The Texas Rangers have designated righthander Guillermo Moscoso for assignment, clearing room on the 40-man roster for recently signed All-Star third baseman Adrian Beltre. - AP
