These words come with the following disclaimer, just for those who read one sentence then run to the comments section to hammer people: The true value of the Yankees' trade for Michael Pineda cannot and will not be felt until several years from now.
But since all we have to go on so far is the first month of the 2012 season, let's take a look at what has transpired (especially in the morning after another not-so-impressive start from Phil Hughes).
Players involved, first degree: Michael Pineda, Jesus Montero, Hector Noesi, Jose Campos.
- Pineda has a torn labrum in his right throwing shoulder and will miss the entire season for the Yankees.
- Seattle's Montero is hitting. 294 (25-for-85) with 4 home runs, 13 RBIs and a .459 slugging percentage in 22 games. He has thrown out one of five runners attempting to steal in his limited time behind the plate.
- Noesi, in four starts this season for Seattle, is 1-2 with an 8.83 ERA. He has allowed 22 hits in 17 innings, while striking out 12. Opponents are hitting .306 against him.
- Campos is 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 24.2 innings over five starts for the Charleston RiverDogs, the Yankees' Single-A team in the South Atlantic League.
Players involved, second degree: Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart.
When the Yankees sent Montero to Seattle, it affected the organization's depth at catcher. That depth was further affected by Austin Romine's back injury. This forced the Yankees, general manager Brian Cashman said at the time, to trade for another catcher. On the day before the season started, the Yankees picked up Chris Stewart from the Giants in exchange for reliever George Kontos, then sent Francisco Cervelli to the minors because he had options left and Stewart did not.
- Stewart is hitting .235 (4-for-17) with one double and thre RBIs. He has not had to attempt to throw out any potential base-stealers.
- Cervelli is hitting .213 with three doubles and six RBIs for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Yankees' Triple-A team. He has thrown out 29 percent of would-be base stealers (5-for-17).
- Kontos has a 2.79 ERA in nine appearances (9.2 innings) for Triple-A Fresno of the Pacific Coast League.
