Win for Seaver

Tom Seaver allowed a run, eight hits and struck out five in 71/3 innings to earn his first career win in leading the Mets over the Cubs, 6-1, before 5,379 at Shea Stadium. The Cubs scored first in the third on Billy Williams' RBI triple, but the Mets went ahead 3-1 in the sixth and added three more runs in the eighth to help the 22-year-old secure the victory. Bud Harrelson had two RBIs and Ken Boyer was 2-for-4 with two runs. In the eighth, after Don Kessinger singled and Glenn Beckert lined out to left, Seaver was pulled for Don Shaw, who got the save. Seaver had gotten a no-decision in his debut against the Pirates a week earlier. Though the Mets went 61-101, the Hall of Famer finished his rookie season 16-13 with a 2.76 ERA.
