In a topsy-turvy weekend, the surprising Indians, Pirates and Diamondbacks made some of the boldest moves at the trade deadline Sunday, shedding those seller tags and shopping for immediate help. It was a relatively quiet deadline day as the non-waivers cutoff came and went.
The Indians completed their Saturday night deal for Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez about a half-hour before the 4 p.m. EDT deadline.
Among those staying put after weeks of speculation: Padres closer Heath Bell, Tampa Bay outfielder B.J. Upton and Astros lefty Wandy Rodriguez.
Teams still can make trades for the rest of the season, but it becomes more complicated. Players must first pass through waivers, meaning any club can get an opportunity to claim them before a deal is done. Trades must be completed before Aug. 31 for a player to be eligible for the postseason with his new team.
Bourn to Braves. Atlanta acquired speedy outfielder Michael Bourn from Houston in a five-player deal. The Astros received outfielder Jordan Schafer and three minor-league pitchers, but the Braves didn't give up any of their top pitching prospects.
Bedard to Red Sox. Boston picked up a much-needed starter after a deal for Rich Harden fell through, landing Bedard from Seattle in a three-team, seven-player trade involving the Dodgers.
Ludwick to Pirates. Pittsburgh acquired outfielder Ryan Ludwick from San Diego for a player to be named or cash. He was acquired by San Diego from St. Louis last July 31 in a three-team deal with Cleveland.
Ziegler to D-backs. Arizona acquired reliever Brad Ziegler from Oakland for a pair of young players, boosting their bullpen for a playoff push.
Relief for Rangers. Texas, needing bullpen help, acquired reliever Mike Adams from San Diego after adding O's setup man Koji Uehara.
