Troy Tulowitzki is on such a September surge, he'll hate to see the calendar flip - unless the Colorado Rockies are still playing deep into October.

And if he stays this hot, they just might.

Tulowitzki had his third multihomer game in a little more than a week and tied a career high with seven RBIs to help the Rockies beat the NL West-leading Padres, 9-6, Wednesday and avoid a series sweep.

"The game's not that easy. I'm just hot right now," Tulowitzki said. "I'm continually trying to remind myself to enjoy this while it lasts. It's not going to last forever."

Jorge De La Rosa (8-4) pitched into the eighth for the Rockies, who moved within 2 1/2 games of San Diego. They also closed within 2 1/2 of the Braves in the wild-card race.

Adrian Gonzalez hit two homers and had five RBIs for the Padres.

Phillies 10, Marlins 5

Roy Halladay (19-10) struck out nine to defeat host Florida for the fourth time this season as surging Philadelphia extended its lead in the NL East to three games.

The win, combined with Atlanta's loss to Washington, gave the two-time defending NL champions their largest division lead since May 25. Philadelphia trailed the Braves by seven games on July 21, and has gone 38-15 since.

Nationals 4, Braves 2

Light-hitting Justin Maxwell's grand slam off rookie Mike Minor in the second inning powered last-place visiting Washington. The Braves lost two of three to the Nats.

Reds 7, Diamondbacks 5

Drew Stubbs homered and Jay Bruce made a homer-saving catch for host Cincinnati. Bruce made a running, leaping catch in the rightfield corner to rob Adam LaRoche of a tying homer and preserve Francisco Cordero's 36th save.

Red Sox 5, Mariners 1

Clay Buchholz (16-7) pitched seven solid innings and Victor Martinez hit a two-run double as visiting Boston completed a three-game sweep.- AP
