Verlander bids again for no-hitter
Justin Verlander came within four outs of another no-hitter, outpitching an angry Jered Weaver as the host Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-2, Sunday.
Maicer Izturis lined an RBI single to left with two outs in the eighth for the Angels' only hit. Verlander (15-5) was trying for his third career no-hitter and second this season.
Weaver (14-5) was ejected for throwing a pitch over Alex Avila's head in the seventh, right after Carlos Guillen showboated on a solo home run.
Red Sox 5, White Sox 3: Dustin Pedroia hit a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh and Jason Varitek homered for visiting Boston. Chicago's Paul Konerko left with a bruised left calf; X-rays were negative.
Blue Jays 7, Rangers 3: Brandon Morrow (8-5) struck out a season-high 11 to win for the third time in four starts and Edwin Encarnacion homered for host Toronto. Texas' C.J. Wilson (10-5) lost his second straight, allowing seven runs in 32/3 innings.
Rays 8, Mariners 1: Jeremy Hellickson (10-7) held host Seattle to five hits and a run in seven innings, becoming the first AL rookie with 10 wins.
Royals 5, Indians 3: Danny Duffy pitched into the sixth inning and Jeff Francoeur and Alex Gordon homered to lead Kansas City. Host Cleveland lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
Athletics 7, Twins 3: Coco Crisp keyed the offense for host Oakland with two hits and three stolen bases. The Twins' Jim Thome hit his 597th homer.
Phillies 6, Pirates 5: Raul Ibañez homered twice and hit the winning double in the 10th inning to lift host Philadelphia.
Brewers 5, Astros 4: Prince Fielder drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as host Milwaukee won its sixth straight.
Cubs 6, Cardinals 3: Starlin Castro and Marlon Byrd had key hits as visiting Chicago broke up Jake Westbrook's perfect game with a four-run sixth. Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer for St. Louis.
D-backs 6, Dodgers 3: Joe Saunders came within four outs of his second straight complete game and Gerardo Parra homered twice for visiting Arizona. The Diamondbacks have won 10 of 15 and are within two games of the NL West-leading Giants.
Reds 9, Giants 0: Johnny Cueto pitched a three-hitter and Joey Votto had a three-run homer and five RBIs for host Cincinnati.
Marlins 3, Atlanta 1: Ricky Nolasco scattered 12 hits and Emilio Bonifacio homered for visiting Florida.
Padres 8, Rockies 3: Jesus Guzman drove in three runs, including the go-ahead run in a six-run eighth inning for host San Diego. -- AP
