Wieters powers Orioles over Nationals

Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as the Baltimore Orioles rallied to beat the Washington Nationals, 2-1, yesterday in Baltimore in a duel between neighboring rivals.

The Orioles appeared headed for their third shutout loss in six games before Adam Jones led off the eighth with a single off Sean Burnett (0-1) and Wieters drove an 0-and-1 pitch over the centerfield wall.

Baltimore scored only five runs in the series and went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position, yet still managed to win two of three.

Rays 3, Phillies 2: Carlos Peña hit a three-run homer in the eighth for visiting Tampa Bay in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Phillies starter Cole Hamels pitched three-hit ball for seven shutout innings, but Peña put the Rays ahead when he connected off Antonio Bastardo (2-2) for his 10th home run. The Rays' David Price (10-4) became the first AL pitcher to reach 10 wins this season.

Marlins 9, Blue Jays 0: Mark Buehrle pitched effectively for seven innings for host Miami. Buehrle (6-8) gave up seven hits in winning his 25th interleague matchup, breaking a tie with Freddy Garcia.

Tigers 3, Pirates 2: Justin Verlander (8-4) pitched a five-hitter and Quintin Berry hit a two-run shot for his first major-league home run for visiting Detroit, which avoided a sweep.

Cardinals 11, Royals 8: Carlos Beltran hit his 20th home run and took the major-league lead in RBIs (56) for visiting St. Louis.

Twins 4, Reds 3: Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth off closer Aroldis Chapman.

Athletics 4, Giants 2: Derek Norris hit a three-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for his first big-league home run for San Francisco.

Angels 5, Dodgers 3: Mark Trumbo drove in Albert Pujols with the tiebreaking run in the seventh for the host Angels.
