Brett Gardner could be activated from the disabled list as early as Wednesday and could even make the postseason roster, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday.

“I wouldn’t say he’s completely ruled out [for the postseason],” Girardi said. “I’m sure it’s something that if you’re sitting around a table you could talk about.”

Gardner has only appeared in nine games this season because of a left elbow problem that required arthroscopic surgery on July 24. The leftfielder can run and play defense, but estimates he is 1-2 weeks away from being able to hit.

“It’s just unfortunate that I had the surgery when I did because the season is coming down to a close and I wish I could have had it sooner,” Gardner said. “Looking back, I would have loved to have done it in April, but we didn’t think it was something that was necessary. I’m excited to be back, even though there’s only a little bit of time. Hopefully I can get in a game or two and help out.”

Gardner injured his elbow making a diving catch against the Twins on April 17. He tried to come back three different times, but was unable to before surgery was performed. At the time, the Yankees said Gardner would not return this season.
