Yankees need length out of starters

BOSTON -- Freddy Garcia's brief outing left the Yankees with only four quality starts in their first 15 games. The bullpen has been able to weather its frequent use, but pitching coach Larry Rothschild knows that's not sustainable. "Obviously the starters need to pick up the pace and pitch us some innings,'' he said.
Derek Jeter had three hits to raise his average to .382 and OBP to .411. He's hit safely in 14 of 15 games . . . Mark Teixeira homered from both sides of the plate for the 13th time, extending his MLB record . . . The hole in the bottom of the Green Monster that brought Girardi out of the dugout twice Friday was covered with a panel. A camera was placed there for Friday's centennial celebration of Fenway.
