Andy Pettitte, who hopes to be back Sept. 1, and CC Sabathia, who expects to start Tuesday night, threw before Friday night's game against the Angels at the Stadium.

Pettitte, out since fracturing his lower left fibula when he was hit by a line drive June 27, walked with a slight limp and had his left ankle heavily taped, which he said dramatically helped with his stability. He threw in the outfield with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

"Just some bad reflexes," Pettitte said of his injury. "Get your foot out of the way."

Pettitte (3-3, 3.22 ERA) will have X-rays Sunday and is "counting down the days" to four weeks from now, when he'll begin working toward returning to the Yankees.

"I'm antsy. You want to work," he said. "If you're not able to pitch, you want at least to be able to go out and go for a run or get a good sweat going . . . I'm feeling better. I'm trying to get what flexibility I can back in it and get all those muscles around it to let up and to feel better."

Said manager Joe Girardi, "I think he's bored to death . . . He's allowed to play catch, but he's not allowed to throw off the mound and run and do the other things. I think he played catch a couple days after sitting in a chair. You just try to keep his arm going so when it is time to do some long-tossing, it doesn't take so long to get going."

Sabathia (9-3, 3.45 ERA), on the disabled list since June 27 with a strained groin, threw 30 pitches in two innings of a simulated game.

"No pain, no problems," said Sabathia, who will throw a bullpen session Sunday. Girardi said he is scheduled to start against Toronto on Tuesday.

Once he gets back, Sabathia has one goal for the second half: "Stay healthy."
