Cashman: Alex Rodriguez isn't at desired spring training weight, but he's getting there
SAN DIEGO -- Alex Rodriguez hasn't made weight.
But he has time to do so and is making progress.
General manager Brian Cashman said Yankees strength coach Matt Krause worked out the 39-year-old Wednesday in Miami and told him the veteran was "moving in the right direction."
However, there is some work to go.
"Like all of our players, you have a report weight [you're] hopeful they hit," Cashman said. "He's approaching that. He's not at the spring training weight that we desire just yet but there is progress"
Cashman declined to specify the target weight.
Krause visited Rodriguez in Miami in early October and reported to Cashman a "thumbs up" with regards to his conditioning. "This is obviously a dedicated and hard-working athlete who is very determined and motivated to come back and be successful," Cashman said shortly after the offseason began.
Cashman has said multiple times this offseason he has no idea what to expect from A-Rod this season. The club does not see him as a viable option at third, with designated hitter Rodriguez's most likely landing spot and, perhaps, the occasional game at first base.
