BRADENTON, Fla. -- To CC Sabathia, it was the first outing of the spring.
Nothing more, nothing less.
A day to get his work in and get into the every-fifth-day routine.
"Felt like it was the first one," the lefty said after allowing one run and three hits in two innings against the Pirates Tuesday. "I still have some work to do but the arm feels good and the body feels good."
Sabathia said when he takes the mound in his first spring outing, he's looking to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes.
"I threw some good cutters and changeups for strikes," he said.
Joe Girardi was looking for even less from the veteran.
"Just keep building him up, building up the arm strength for all these guys," Girardi said. "That's the important thing. Making sure they don't have setbacks and can go every fifth day."
Teixeira shakes it off
First baseman Mark Teixeira was seen shaking his left hand in some discomfort after his glove was ripped off by Nick Evans as he tried a swipe tag after an errant Robinson Cano relay on a potential double-play grounder in the fourth.
"I just jammed my thumb a little bit," Teixeira said. "It stung a little bit. Nothing to worry about."
Nuñez update
Infielder Eduardo Nuñez, who left Monday's game in Clearwater after getting hit by a pitch on his right hand, was not in early for treatment Tuesday and appears to be OK.
"I plan on playing him tomorrow if it's not too bad," Girardi said.
Extra bases
RHP Hiroki Kuroda makes his spring debut Wednesday against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field . . . Joba Chamberlain threw another 30-pitch bullpen session and said he should be able to throw breaking balls either Friday or Sunday.
