Don Mattingly offered simple advice for whoever replaces Derek Jeter, but at the same time was under no illusion of what that player will face.

"It's going to be a rough one probably for anyone having to come in right behind Derek," Mattingly said last night before he was honored at the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter's annual Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit at the Marriott Marquis. "I don't think you can try to live up to that. I think you just have to be yourself. I think the fans will appreciate that. If you're a guy that plays the game right and gets after it, I think the fans will accept him over time."

Mattingly, now the Dodgers manager, watched from afar as Tino Martinez initially struggled in filling his shoes in 1996. Coincidentally, Mattingly and Martinez shared the same agent, Jim Krivacs, and the two spoke shortly after that season started.

"He was getting tough treatment from the fans and I remember [I told him], 'just be yourself, do your thing, it's going to be enough,'" Mattingly said. Jeter also was honored at Tuesday night's event, and though he briefly greeted a few reporters he recognized, he did not take questions.

Betances ROY finalist. The Baseball Writers' Association of America announced that Yankees righthander Dellin Betances is one of three finalist for the AL Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award, joined by first baseman Jose Abreu of the White Sox and pitcher Matt Shoemaker of the Angels. The winner will be announced Monday.
