Hurricane big concern for Girardi

BALTIMORE -- Joe Girardi has obvious local concerns relating to Hurricane Irene, mostly how it will affect his baseball team. But his mind is home, too, mainly with his wife, Kim, and their three children.
"That worries me,'' Girardi said. "I've talked to my wife a lot and just making sure . . . I've never been through a hurricane. Even the years we lived in Florida, we never went through one. And there's concerns. And I'm sure players have concerns. Some of the players' families are here. I don't know if Baltimore's going to be a better place to be than New York. I don't know.''
Girardi managed the Marlins in 2006. "The one thing I know we all had in Florida was hurricane-proof windows,'' he said. "My sense is hotels here [don't] and houses in New York don't have hurricane-proof windows, and that's a concern of mine. I told my wife, keep the kids away from the windows.''
One Yankee who has been through a hurricane is Alex Rodriguez, who went to high school in Miami and was living there when Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm, made landfall in 1992.
"That,'' he said, "was a son of a ----.''
Joe on A.J.
Girardi said that in the days since A.J. Burnett had his meltdown in Minneapolis last Saturday, he did not talk with the pitcher about his propensity to let his emotions get the better of him.
"It could be , but I think people still have the same emotions; it's just how they display them,'' Girardi said of Friday night's starter. "I've always been taught keep your public display to a minimum. It's what I grew up with, it's what I saw at home. For me, it's easy to do. But that doesn't mean I don't have feelings I would love to come out. It's just what you do with those feelings and if you're able to control them.''
Carry overGirardi still was shaking his head over Thursday's 22-9 win over Oakland. "It was amazing to watch. It was a tale of two games,'' he said. "To have three grand slams in your final four at-bats, it's hard to fathom.''
Jeter: No commentDerek Jeter politely but sternly dismissed an Associated Press reporter who asked him about his reported breakup with Minka Kelly. "That's the end of the questions,'' he said. "No mas.''
