The Yankees like to take players with them to the playoffs even if they are not on the roster. Maybe it's a reward, maybe it's torture for veterans like Javy Vazquez who aren't allowed to play.

Why do they do it? In case they need Vazquez or catcher Chad Moeller or Chad Gaudin as an injury replacement or for the next round. The players work out with the team and stay sharp.

The Yankees also decided to stash Ivan Nova, Eduardo Nunez and Royce Ring in Tampa for the same reasons.

Here's what Vazquez had to say:

"Obviously, it's disappointing, but I can't say I was surprised or anything. I was on the bubble, I guess. It's difficult as a competitor, because you want to be out there, obviously, but also this is a team and if I was not going to be on the roster I don't want to go to Tampa. I want to be here because I want to be with the team. I want to feel like part of the team and obviously the guys that are playing I want to be there for them."
