It seems almost certain that Jesus Montero will play in the postseason.
Joe Girardi, known for being tight-lipped about his postseason preferences, let the roster news slip before Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader.
"I can't envision a scenario where he won't be on our postseason roster," the manager said. "But those are things that we need to continue to talk about."
Montero, 21, went 3-for-4 with a home run and collected a career-high four RBIs Saturday. He didn't play in Game 1 of the doubleheader, but after going 2-for-4 with a double and two walks in Game 2, he is hitting .357.
If the Yankees play the Tigers in the ALDS, Montero could be a non-factor against Detroit's all-righty rotation. "It very well could, yes," Girardi said. "But every team does have lefthanded relievers."
Simulated game for CCTo allow CC Sabathia to pitch on regular rest in ALDS Game 1 Friday, the Yankees had him throw 65 pitches (about four innings) in a simulated game. He will throw a bullpen session tomorrow.
Extra basesHector Noesi will pitch Monday nightvs. the Rays, followed by Bartolo Colon Tuesday night. Girardi said he's undecided about Wednesday night.
Girardi said Phil Hughes will be used out of the bullpen the next few days and, at least for now, in the playoffs. "We might need some innings out of him this week with this crazy night," Girardi said after the 14-inning Game 2 loss.
Hughes, who learned the news between games, said he "did it to myself'' because of his recent back ailment. "I'm looking to help the team in any way I can,'' he said.
Francisco Cervelli (concussion) will travel with the team to Florida and might catch a bullpen session.
