DETROIT -- Rangers general manager Jon Daniels wasn't in the mood, and understandably so.

During the Rangers' 7-5 loss to the Tigers in ALCS Game 5 Thursday, an online report out of New York surfaced saying Texas was prepared to throw "a boatload of money" at CC Sabathia should the lefthander choose to opt out of his contract, which he's expected to do.

"I don't know anything about any reports out of New York," a weary-looking and dismissive Daniels said to three New York writers after the game. "I watched a baseball game in Detroit."

What the typically media-friendly Daniels said before the game was much more illuminating, not to mention a contradiction of the report that was to come.

"In our position, we can't pay free-agent dollars for everybody," he said. "We need to be able to develop our own players and specifically pitching."
