Jorge Posada officially will retire Tuesday at an 11 a.m. news conference at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees announced Monday.

Posada, 40, spent his entire 17-year career with the Yankees. He finished with a .273 average, a .374 on-base percentage and a .474 slugging percentage with 275 home runs and 1,065 RBIs. He has five World Series rings (1996, 1998-2000, 2009), although he was not on the 1996 postseason roster.

Posada had a difficult final season in pinstripes as he was phased out as a catcher, making only one emergency appearance behind the plate Sept. 10. Used mostly as a lefthanded designated hitter, Posada finished with a career-low .235 average with 14 homers and 44 RBIs in 387 plate appearances.

The low point came May 14 when he asked out of the lineup after manager Joe Girardi listed him as ninth in the batting order against the Red Sox. After a tense day of meetings, Posada cooled off and grudgingly accepted his reduced role.

Posada hit .429 in the Yankees' five-game ALDS loss to the Tigers. After considering playing in 2012, he decided not to pursue a job with another team, preferring to go out as a Yankee.

The news conference will be carried live on YES.
