PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Mariano Rivera made the call himself. He wanted a little more work.

After an 11-pitch first inning and two strikeouts Monday afternoon against Blue Jays minor-leaguers at the Yankees' minor-league complex, Rivera approached pitching coach Larry Rothschild. "Mo wants to get a couple more outs," Rothschild reported.

And so Rivera, who hadn't allowed a run in three innings in three previous games, went out for a second inning. It wasn't as crisp as his first -- he gave up a run and a hit -- but he was pleased. "I wanted to stretch it out more," said Rivera, who threw 25 total pitches. "So it's OK. Felt good. Body feels good."

Rivera said his next outing is likely to be Wednesday night's home game against the Blue Jays, with not much more work to be done before he's ready for the regular season. "Maybe two more [outings],'' he said.

Feliciano improving

LHP Pedro Feliciano (sore upper left arm) threw 15 pitches in the bullpen Saturday without pain and threw a 25-pitch session Monday, again without pain. "Feels good," he said.

Feliciano said he will throw either a bullpen session or batting practice Wednesday, then appear in a game Friday or Saturday.

Girardi cautious

Joba Chamberlain (oblique) is scheduled to make the trip to Sarasota for Tuesday afternoon's game against the Orioles, but Joe Girardi said he's not ready to say he is past his injury. "You feel better than you did a week ago," Girardi said, "but you still want to see what it looks like. There's still some concern until you get through that first one."

Extra bases

Manny Banuelos, 20, who entered Monday night's game with 72/3 scoreless innings, took over in the seventh and gave up a tiebreaking solo homer to Dan Johnson in the Rays' 3-1 victory . . . Girardi said Eric Chavez will be out until Friday with right calf spasms. No tests have been deemed necessary.
