Phil Niekro wins 300th game

Phil Niekro spent just two seasons with the Yankees in his 24-year career but his final game in a Yankees uniform, and the final game of the season, was a career highlight. He pitched a four-hit, 8-0 shutout of the Toronto Blue Jays at Exhibition Stadium for his 300th career victory. The righthanded knuckleballer struck out five and walked three. Henry Cotto had a two-run single and two-run homer, Mike Pagliarulo hit a two-run homer and Don Mattingly also homered. Niekro won 16 games in both seasons he spent with the Yankees. He pitched two more seasons, retiring with 318 victories.
