Looking to add depth to their outfield, the Yankees acquired Justin Maxwell Wednesday from the Nationals for minor-league pitcher Adam Olbrychowski.

Maxwell, 27, who can play each outfield spot, has appeared in 122 major-league games in three seasons with Washington (2007, '09-10), never reaching the potential that made him a fourth-round pick in 2005.

Maxwell, who had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in October but is expected to be ready for spring training, hit .144 with a .305 OBP in 67 games last season. Overall in the big leagues, he's hit .201 with a .319 OBP. The Yankees do not have a lot of depth behind outfielders Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Andruw Jones. Colin Curtis and Greg Golson, who saw time last year, will compete for a reserve spot.

To make room for Maxwell, who has an option left, on the 40-man roster, outfielder Jordan Parraz was designated for assignment.
