Yankees' relievers fail in loss to Cubs

CHICAGO — Nico Hoerner hit a tying home run and Pete Crow-Armstrong added an RBI triple in a three-run seventh as the Chicago Cubs beat the Yankees, 5-2, on Saturday night.

After Fernando Cruz replaced Angel Chivilli, Hoerner led off the seventh with a home run to tie it at 2-2. Cruz recorded two outs before walking Pedro Ramirez. Brent Headrick then allowed a tiebreaking triple into the rightfield corner by Crow-Armstrong and an RBI single by Seiya Suzuki. Michael Busch made it 5-2 in the eighth with an RBI single off Yovanny Cruz.

Crow-Armstrong walked in the first and scored on Max Fried’s second wild pitch of the inning.

Through four innings, the Yankees were 1-for-13 and hadn’t scored, making them 17-for-117 with four runs scored in their last 35 innings.

Spencer Jones reached on Busch’s two-out error in the fifth, moved to second on Ali Sanchez’s single and scored on Jose Caballero’s single.

With the wind blowing in from centerfield at 21 mph, Jones homered to left-center off lefthander David Peterson in the seventh to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Sanchez had three hits and Jones added two.

Peterson, a former Met, allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out eight in 6 1⁄3 innings.

Fried allowed two hits and one run in 5 1⁄3 innings, walking one and striking out seven.

In the past five games, Yankees starters have allowed two runs in 31 1⁄3 innings.
