Joe Girardi and Mariners manager Eric Wedge go all the way back to when the pair were both taken by the expansion Rockies in 1993. He knows and likes Wedge and feels sorry for the lot of the Mariners, now losers of 16 straight. But only to a point.

"That's a tough situation that they're in," Girardi said. "But the bottom line is we're trying to win games."

Derek Jeter said "not when you're playing them," asked if he felt some sympathy for the Mariners.

"When we're playing them we're trying to beat them," Jeter said. "But, yeah, you have sympathy for individuals when they struggle, teams when they struggle, because everyone's gone through it, and you know how difficult it is. It's not easy playing this game."
