Over the weekend, the Yankees held out some hope that Jacoby Ellsbury might be able to return Thursday, the first day he’s eligible to come off the disabled list.

That hope was dashed Tuesday when Aaron Boone said the oft-injured veteran, rehabbing in Tampa from the right oblique strain that kept him out of most of spring training, was “dealing with a little bit of a hip thing.”

Boone said Ellsbury, 34, has been shut down for “a couple of days,” more bad news for a club that is short on outfielders with starting centerfielder Aaron Hicks already on the DL (right oblique strain), as are Clint Frazier (concussion) and rookie Billy McKinney (shoulder).

Not coincidentally, shortly after Boone spoke, the Yankees announced they had acquired outfielder Trayce Thompson off waivers from the Dodgers. They also transferred pitcher Ben Heller (right elbow bone spur) to the 60-day disabled list.

Thompson, the brother of Warriors guard Klay Thompson, can play all three outfield positions. The righthanded hitter, a solid defender, hit .207 with a .287 OBP with 14 homers in 107 games the last two seasons with the Dodgers.

“Just felt a little something in the hip,” Boone said of Ellsbury. “It’s going to cost him a couple of days here, but it’s different from what he was dealing with. Hopefully, it’s something small and not a big deal and not a huge setback.”

Warren ready

Adam Warren, who left Saturday’s game after taking a comebacker off his right ankle, was expected to be available Tuesday if needed. He wasn’t, but Boone did get him up in the eighth inning.
