The Yankees on Tuesday night acquired lefthander Ryan Weathers from the Marlins for four prospects.

Weathers, 26, is the son of former reliever David Weathers, who starred for the Yankees in the 1996 postseason.

In exchange, the Yankees are sending outfielders Brendan Jones and Dillon Lewis and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. According to MLB Pipeline, Jones is ranked 15th, Lewis 16th and Jasso 23rd among Yankees prospects. Matheus is not rated.

Ryan Weathers, selected as the seventh overall pick by the Padres in the 2018 draft, could slide into the back of the Yankees’ rotation to start the season. In 2025, he made only eight starts due to multiple injuries, including a left flexor strain. He went 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA.

In his career with San Diego and Miami, Weathers is 12-23 with a 4.93 ERA in 70 games (55 starts). He has never made more than 18 starts in a season (his rookie year of 2021).

The Yankees will start 2026 without injured starters Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt. All are expected back at different points during the season. The Yankees will start the season with a likely rotation of Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Luis Gil and Weathers, with Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn around for depth.

Weathers' father went 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in seven postseason relief appearances for the Yankees on the way to the 1996 world championship.
