Yankees select hard-throwing righty Ty Hensley

Brian Cashman has always said that given a choice, he prefers the big power pitcher. The Yankees took one Monday night in MLB's first-year player draft, selecting Ty Hensley out of Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Okla., with the 30th overall pick.

The 6-5, 220-pound right-hander has a fastball that scouts have clocked as high as 97 mph. And according to Baseball America, the fastball "isn't even his best pitch. That would be a 12-to-6 curveball that he spins in the upper 70s." Baseball America had Hensley rated as the ninth-best righthanded pitcher in this year's draft.

"We're excited to get a guy with such a high ceiling," Yankees vice president of amateur scouting Damon Oppenheimer said. "He has the ideal body for a high school pitcher, as well as power stuff, and he has the ability to be a high-end starter. He's demonstrated a quality makeup and has shown himself to be a hard worker, which makes him a quality pick for us."
