Yankees still talking about Andruw Jones
Agent Scott Boras attended yesterday's news conference to introduce Rafael Soriano and even sat on the dais along with Yankees officials.
Boras represents Soriano. He also represents Andruw Jones and Johnny Damon, two free agents who are on the Yankees' radar.
Boras met with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to continue conversations about the veteran outfielders.
Jones is a better fit because he is a righthanded hitter and a superior defensive outfielder.
"We're still talking,'' Boras said before meeting with Cashman. "I gauge it as there is interest on both sides, but we don't have anything final.''
Jones, 33, hit .230 with 19 home runs and 48 RBIs in 107 games for the Chicago White Sox last season. Damon, 37, hit .271-8-51 for Detroit in 2010. The Yankees are familiar with Damon, who could be a positive clubhouse influence.
"I've talked to Scott about Andruw Jones, amongst others,'' Cashman said. "I don't know where it's going to go, to be honest. I'd like to get a fourth outfielder that hits from the right side, in theory, so he has one of those guys."
Jones would replace Marcus Thames, who signed with the Dodgers. Damon's role would be a little tougher to predict because starting outfielders Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson are lefthanded hitters.
Jeter's the 1. Joe Girardi said Derek Jeter would be his leadoff hitter if the season started "right now." But it doesn't - it starts March 31.
