There was no ritual dismissal of Vidal Nuño from the Yankees' rotation on Wednesday, no ripping off epaulets or pinstripes. Joe Girardi confirmed that Nuño, after surrendering a pair of three-run home runs in the first two innings against Oakland on Sunday, will take his usual turn Saturday against the Orioles.

Furthermore Nuño, whose 5.90 ERA is the worst of the team's starters, technically will not be pitching with his starting job on the line. "I don't ever put that type of pressure on people," Girardi said. Still, Girardi acknowledged that his players "understand what's on the line every day, and they understand this is a performance-based business, and they have to go out and perform."

And there have been hints that Adam Warren, who had been a starter throughout his four minor-league seasons before being sent to the bullpen in 65 of 67 games with the Yankees over the last two seasons, could be reoriented to starting. "I'm definitely open to it," said Warren, who pitched two scoreless innings last night. "Long-term, I still see myself , because that's how I came up. That's what most of my career has been."

You know, right now I see myself as a reliever because I've been doing that a couple of months, did that last year."

Nuño, meanwhile, said his task is to "just keep fighting and see where it takes me" and to work on controlling his cut fastball. "I have the confidence and everything," he said. "It's just, the main [problem], is pitches that are up."

CC throws again

As for the Yankees' other pitching gaps: With Ivan Nova lost for the year because of elbow surgery and Michael Pineda expected to miss at least six or seven more weeks with a shoulder injury, CC Sabathia continued his rehabilitation from knee inflammation with a bullpen session.
