Zack Greinke hammers Chris Carpenter
MILWAUKEE -- Chris Carpenter, whose Friday shutout eliminated the Phillies, won't pitch again until Game 3 of the NLCS. But the Brewers took a few early hacks at the St. Louis ace during Saturday's pre-series workout at Miller Park.
It's already been established that these teams aren't very chummy after a few regular-season incidents between them, most notably Nyjer Morgan talking smack at Carpenter.
To hear Brewers Game 1 starter Zack Greinke fire the opening salvo against Carpenter, however, was a bit surprising. Greinke usually keeps a low profile because of his social-anxiety disorder, but he didn't shy away from the spotlight Saturday.
When asked if the two teams "legitimately dislike" each other, Greinke said, "Maybe now. I think no one really likes Carpenter. But besides that, I think they respect mostly everyone on their team."
Greinke was prodded further about Carpenter, and he was all too happy to oblige.
"They think his presence, his attitude out there, sometimes is like a phony attitude," Greinke said. "And then he yells at people. He just stares people down and stuff. And most pitchers just don't do that. And when guys do, I guess some hitters get mad . . . A lot of guys on our team don't like Carpenter."
Shortly after Greinke's news conference, Tony La Russa dived into the fray, coming to the defense of Carpenter.
"I'm very disappointed that Greinke would say that," La Russa said. "I don't know him a lot, but I always thought he was a high-character, classy guy.
"Our attitude is we look at ourselves and we grade ourselves. And even if we don't like what's happening on the other side, it's not our business, unless somebody crosses the line. So I think the Brewers should take care of their players and their comments and not be concerned about other players and comments."
