About halfway through the expected 8-12 month recovery time for his torn left ACL, Derrick Rose appeared in Chicago to unveil his new shoe, the adidas D Rose 3.
The event coordinators started the event by playing Rose's latest adidas commercial, part of a marketing campaign coined "#thereturn."
An emcee then took the microphone to introduce the Bulls point guard. For a moment, Rose wasn't able to compose himself, holding his head in his hands for several seconds before talking with the audience.
“With all this stuff that’s going on in this city," Rose, referring to the teachers strike, said through tears, "a kid from Englewood has something positive going on. That makes me feel so good."
Rose has been vocal about his native city, specifically this summer when he tweeted about the teachers strike:
I'm sitting here just thinking how sad it is that my city got to go through this. I love my city and everyone in it even my haters!

I don't like that fact that OUR kids are not in school and that's the only thing we have to SAVE these kids.

Rose tore his ACL in the NBA playoffs on April 28 against the Philadelphia 76ers. Depending on the speed of his recovery, he could return anywhere between late December and May.
