Knicks' Clifton is first black in NBA
Nat (Sweetwater) Clifton made his Knicks debut and became the first African-American player in NBA history, suiting up in the 87-76 loss at Tri-Cities in Moline, Ill. He scored 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting and had 12 rebounds and four assists. After playing with the Harlem Globetrotters from 1948 to early 1950, Clifton averaged 8.6 points and 7.6 rebounds as a 28-year-old rookie. He averaged 10.0 points and 8.2 rebounds in an eight-year NBA career.
