As former Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni gets set to take the reigns of the Los Angeles Lakers in his first game as their head coach tonight against the Phoenix Suns, he admitted he was surprised he got the job.
On WFAN today with Mike Francesa, D'Antoni said he thought the gig would go to former Lakers coach Phil Jackson.
"The natural choice was Phil, and I kind of thought he would do it," D'Antoni said. "But for whatever reason and definitely for me not to question, but they wanted me to do it, and I was overjoyed and thrilled looking at the roster. I'm a very excited guy right now."
